Recovered Articles

I just received an indirect reminder that what goes up on the Internet becomes public knowledge and can be recovered long after the details are removed.

A contact of mine at CLUG reminded me of archive.org, where they take periodic snapshots of websites, and store them for historical purposes. So of course, I had to look up my own domain (www.open2space.com).

So long Digg!

I've been using Digg on my Tech News page for about a year now. But, they have recently changed their format, and after getting irritated with this one too many times, I've opted to remove their news feed.

Why? Well I guess it boils down to three points:

  • Poor browser support - I like Konqueror. Digg doesn't. Digg's CSS worked, but not cleanly on Konqueror. This wasn't a deal breaker though, but rather an irritation.

Server heat stroke

(NOTE: This post has been updated. See the note at the bottom.)

Calgary has been experiencing warm weather these past few days - it got to 32 degrees Celcius (approx 90 degrees Farenheit). This makes for a very warm and stuffy environment, so needless to say the productivity has died off during this period. But even worse, one of my development servers has suffered a heat stroke.

No More Movie Industry?

Lately it seems that we cannot go a day without hearing some gossip about some celebrity. Frankly I don't care. But obviously someone does, otherwise we wouldn't be getting the latest infidelity news shoved down our throats. They even have whole television shows dedicated to nothing more than the rumours coming out of Hollywood.

Today, in the past hour I ended up seeing news about the best dress on Angelie Jolie, hearing a bit of her latest cause of the day, and even saw wedding footage of Nicole Kidman. All while I was channel surfing to find something worthwhile to watch.

New Theme

After the upgrade to Drupal 4.7, the Friends Electric theme just wasn't cutting it for me anymore. So I went hunting for another.

And now we have "GoldenGray", which is based on a WordPress theme.

What do you think? Too classy for me? I'm not sure what I think of this one yet, though I do know it's a better option than a lot of others I looked at.

Internet Down

Sighs... It had to happen sooner or later.

My ISP suffered an outage today that took out all of southern Alberta (so I'm told by their tech support). I'm on cable, and the first hint of a problem was when the Television cable went. We'll never know what Peg Bundy spent the grocery money on now... Redundant ISPs would have been handy tonight, but my servers just don't do enough (yet) to justify the costs.

Internet Piracy

It finally happened. Something has finally irked me enough to write about Internet Piracy.

Kubuntu automation is not always good

Last week, I decided to replace my Gentoo installation on my desktop PC with Kubuntu. For all you fellow Gentoo lovers out there, I'm not abandoning Gentoo - it will have a home on my personal servers for the foreseeable future...

Class Over

Just finished teaching another JavaScript class at the University of Calgary. This is the last one for this season. I will likely see the contract for the fall/winter season sometime this summer.

But, in the meantime, I need to mark the assignments and final exam from this course, and figure out who passed... I'm sure they all passed though.

Email, RBLs, and Smarthosts

When I send email to some of my contacts, I have been getting a bounce message indicating my email was being treated as spam. This is due to my IP addresses being in a range of IPs on a Realtime Blackhole List (RBL). The idea of an RBL is simple - if you send spam, your IP gets tagged as a spammer and added to a list. Other responsible mail admins can "subscribe" to the list and then block any messages from your IP. This is just one of many methods to fight spam, but can sometimes be controversial - as I found out.
