New Bio Page

I've just finished updating my Bio page. It was getting a little outdated.

In this new version, I have included a short version of my bio, as well as a long version (for those who are morbidly curious). But in addition, I have also included a portfolio as well. The tech articles here are the best portfolio for me though, seeing as they show off the various issues and topics I encounter on a regular basis.

Enjoy!

My flights have fancy have flown away.

My flights have fancy have flown away.
My imagination has withered and died.
My motivation has lost it's motivation.
My world has shrunk to encompass very little.
My faith died long ago.
My trust is shattered and in peices.
My ego is not overly proud of itself.

But.

My beliefs are still strong.
My hope is eternal.
My will lives on.
My daughter makes me smile.

I will last another day.

Where did the time go?

Looking at my blog, I see I have been absent for a while. Which seems odd - it feels like the last post was done just a short while ago. I think I'm seeing the summer days fly by way too fast.

But here is a quick update on what I've been working on:

  • Business Coding - I continue to make my living writing code (awesome!!). In this area most of my time is spent on the occasional support request for a long established app, and working on the next major overhaul of that app (which leads into some of the other items on this list).

Christmas Spirit Revamp

With Christmas coming up, It was time to tweak the look/feel of the site a little to get into the spirit of the season. So we now have a red theme with a splash of green. As an added bonus, this tweak *finally* got me to fix the logo placement issue I have been ignoring for months.

Here's wishing everyone a great holiday season!

Today I voted with a flawed system.

Today is the federal election for Canada. I did my duty and voted. However, in doing so I have observed a few flaws with the system. If we don't talk about these flaws, they'll never be resolved. So....

What follows is my own observations and opinion. I fully expect that some of these perceived flaws have been addressed, or there may be a necessary need for them, being the lesser of two evils sort of thing. Or perhaps my observation/opinion is just wrong.

Flaw #1 - Party government vs Representational government.

Fundraising, Live'r Up!, and pictures....

Today was a busy fund raising day. I started out by helping my friend Lisa with a BBQ at the TransCanada Mall to raise funds for the Breast Cancer walk she is aiming for in the spring. The day ended with the Live'r Up gala talent show organized by another friend of mine - Carrie - for the Canadian Liver Foundation. Both events were a smashing success. Lisa made a large chunk of the her target for the walk, and Carrie knows how to throw a party!

DefCon 16 - Pictures

I know some of my friends have been hounding me to post the pictures from my visit to DefCon 16. So, I have done so. And even organized them. You can see these pics at http://grover.open2space.com/defcon/index.htm.

For those who don't know what DefCon is....

Sometimes I think too much

I'm having a restless night and felt the urge to jot down some of what was going through my mind. For a change, this is a non-technical post. I tried to be brief, but well, here:

I am sitting here restless
feeling the need to be doing something,
lacking the focus to determine what.

Thoughts of reflection flowing through my mind
As I try to find something to distract me
long enough to fall asleep again.

Regrets of the past and present,
wondering if the right choices were made,
where I would be if another path were followed.

Lost or abandoned loves,
what could have been,

Back online - er, was I offline at all?

Well, that was lots of planning for what turned out to be a non issue. The server moved, but we only had a 3 hour window without Internet. We were close enough to our old location that we ended up with the same static IP addresses even. So all the planning and warnings were well, useless. Oh well, it gave me something to do (like I don't have enough on my plate already... :)

Going Offline - kinda

My server will be moving in the next day or two. So all the sites hosted on it will be offline for a short bit. This includes the following:
